Depeche Mode formed in Essex in 1980. They were primarily a New Wave group, but quickly gained following with the growing gothic-rock crowd. They were an early heavy influence on darkwave, some industrial, and later gothic rock groups through the 1990s, and are a club standard almost anywhere in the world there's a dance club.
